Instruments & Sticks
Throughout my travels, I’ve come across a variety of unusual and special percussion instruments. These photos represent some of the instruments I was able to photograph. Throughout my career with the Florida Philharmonic, whenever we had an unusual instrument to find, I always thought “what do other orchestra’s do for this instrument?” Well, here are some answers. Also included, my personal collection of instruments and sticks/mallets.
Paris Opera

PAS Museum/PASIC 2010
During PASIC 2010 I had the opportunity to visit the PAS Museum - I photographed several of the interesting and unusual instruments at the museum. Also, a few rope drums from Lee Caron’s Swiss Rudimental
Xenakis Pleiades Sixxtum
I had the pleasure of hearing Xanakis’ Pleiades at PASIC 2010 - it was performed by So Percussion and the Meehan/Perkins Duo. The piece calls for several “Sixxtum” - photos below. Amazing instrument! Sixxtum
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

NHK Orchestra
I had a chance to see the NHK Orchestra in Carnegie Hall. I was able to take photos of some of their instruments. Amazing SD and some great mallets! They used many types of mallets

I had a chance to see Lee Vinson at the Boston Symphony - while back stage I saw Tom Gauger’s bass drum! Also, Dan Bauch did a class at Boston Conservatory - at the class
